Every August 15th, Catholics around the world come together to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a day that marks the moment when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was assumed body and soul into heaven. This celebration is more than just a commemoration; it is a profound reflection of Mary’s role in the tapestry of salvation history and a testament to Her purity and holiness.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the day when Our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, was assumed body and soul into heaven. Although the Assumption was proclaimed as a dogma (core belief) of the Church in 1950, it was always believed from the earliest days of the Church that Mary experienced a holy dormition and was assumed in Heaven. Her body could not experience corruption in the grave because she is completely sinless, immaculate or tota pulchra in Latin. This celebration is more than just a commemoration; it is a profound reflection of Mary’s role in the tapestry of salvation history and a testament to Her purity and holiness. Just days later, the Apparition at Knock, Ireland serves as a powerful reminder of Mary’s intercession and support, especially during the Irish people’s suffering through famine and persecution. This vision brought comfort and reassurance, with Our Lady appearing alongside Saint Joseph and Saint John, emphasising themes of faith, family, and resilience.

On August 22nd, the Church celebrates the Queenship of Mary, underlining Her role as a heavenly sovereign and a loving intercessor for her children on Earth. In this context, Message 108 from Father Stefano Gobbi’s book “To the Priests, Our Lady’s Beloved Sons”, given on this feast day in 1976, holds particular resonance. Titled Your Queen and Your Leader, this message speaks directly to the heart of Mary’s mission and Her relationship with the faithful. It reminds us of her role not just as a distant figure of reverence but as an active, personal guide intricately involved in our spiritual journey.

The Feast of the Assumption: August 15th

On August 15th, Catholics celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, which celebrates that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. This event is more than a theological cornerstone; it is a source of hope and inspiration for the faithful. The Assumption affirms Mary’s purity and Her close relationship with God. It is a promise of what is to come for all who lead a life of faith and devotion.

The Assumption is a day of joy and reflection, encouraging believers to aspire to spiritual purity and reminding them that earthly struggles are temporary in the face of eternal life. It is a time to celebrate Mary’s unique role in salvation history and Her ongoing intercession for Her children.

The Apparition at Knock: August 21st

Less than a week after the Feast of the Assumption, another significant Marian event is remembered – the apparition at Knock, Ireland, on August 21, 1879. This apparition is particularly remarkable as it is said to have occurred on the 100th night of 100 Masses offered by Archdeacon Cavanagh for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. These Masses were a spiritual response to the immense suffering endured by the Irish people during years of famine and persecution.

The Irish Famine had seen devastating impacts, with many choosing to die rather than renounce their Catholic faith in exchange for food offered by Protestant overlords. In such times of despair, the apparition at Knock became a symbol of hope and divine reassurance.

On that evening, witnesses reported seeing a heavenly vision: Our Lady, crowned and standing beside Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist, with a sacrificial Lamb upon an altar and surrounded by angels. This scene is unique among Marian apparitions, as Our Lady appeared with Her hands apart, looking upward in adoration – a powerful representation of the Holy Mass descending from Heaven to Earth.

Our Lady of Knock’s apparition took place on the eve of the Feast of Our Lady’s Queenship, celebrated on August 22nd. This timing served to affirm Her role as a Heavenly Queen and Protector, always present for Her children in their times of need. The inclusion of Saint Joseph, Saint John, and the imagery of the Lamb further underscores themes of family, faith, and sacrifice.

A Message of Hope and Endurance

Both the Assumption and the Knock apparition represent messages of hope and endurance. They remind us that even in the darkest times, Our Lady is interceding for Her children. Her appearances in these events serve as reminders of God’s love and the promise of salvation.

In a world often filled with challenges and uncertainties, the dedication of August to Our Lady provides a spiritual anchor – a time to renew our faith and trust in Her intercession. Through these devotions, believers are encouraged to reflect on their own lives, seek spiritual growth, and find comfort in Mary’s maternal care.

Reflecting on Message 108: Your Queen and Your Leader

In this message, Our Lady addresses the priests, reminding them of Her role as both their Queen and their Leader. She calls upon them to trust in Her guidance and to align themselves with Her mission, which is dedicated to leading souls to Christ. Mary emphasises Her unique position, not just as a distant figure of reverence but as an active and personal guide who is intricately involved in their spiritual journey.

Her words are filled with maternal care, urging the priests to stay united with Her, especially in challenging times. She reassures them of Her constant presence and support, encouraging them to be courageous and faithful to their calling. This guidance is not restricted to priests alone but extends to all the faithful, inviting them to seek Her intercession and follow her example of humility and devotion.

This August, as we meditate on these Marian feasts and messages, we are called to deepen our relationship with Mary, the mother of the King of the universe. In ancient times kings often made their mothers the queen. This was the case with king Solomon, where his mother Bathsheba reigned with him as queen.  Our Lady is all mercy and devotion to Her is a great gift from God. She is our spiritual Mother and we her children and as a mother, she is attentive to all our needs, especially when we do as She asks in Her many apparitions around the world. Let us honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Queen, by living out Her messages. She is our leader in the great spiritual battle going on in the world. Let’s use the weapon of the Holy Rosary to speed up the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and to hasten the coming of the reign of the Divine Will upon the earth.  Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us!
