As 26 July approaches, our hearts at the Divine Mercy Shrine turn with special warmth towards a deeply cherished mother and grandmother. For us, this feast day hits close to home. Our sister church in Bindoon is proudly dedicated to St Anne, serving as a constant local reminder of the quiet, unseen foundation upon which God built the salvation of the world.
While Scripture remains silent on the details of her life, sacred tradition and the mystical heritage of the Catholic Church open a radiant window into the woman who held, nursed, and raised the Mother of God.
To truly understand St Anne, we must first look at the grand tapestry of God’s design.
A Masterpiece Planned from Eternity
God’s plan for our redemption was never an afterthought. Before the foundations of the world were laid, He foresaw the woman who would say “yes” to the Incarnation. To prepare a worthy, immaculate vessel for His Son, God first needed a holy, hidden garden in which that vessel could be formed.
That garden was the womb of St Anne.
While the name Anne is not found in the biblical canon, her story was passed down through early Christian writing, most notably the Protoevangelium of James (c. 150 AD). In this ancient text, St Anne is mentioned fifteen times, recording the heartbreak of her long trial of childlessness alongside her husband, St Joachim. For years, they endured the social pain of barrenness, yet they never stopped pouring out their hearts in trust. When God finally broke His silence, He did not merely give them a child; He gave them the Queen of Heaven.

Through the revelations granted to Catholic visionaries across the centuries, the hidden perfection of St Anne’s life comes alive with astonishing clarity.
The Rule of Three
In the extraordinary visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, a 19th-century German stigmatic, we learn that St Anne belonged to a lineage connected to the devout Essene community. Living a life marked by monastic discipline within the holy state of matrimony, Anne and Joachim lived on Mount Carmel, leading a quiet life entirely surrendered to Divine Providence.
Emmerich reveals a striking practice that defined their daily existence: the Rule of Three.
Anne and Joachim divided their income and possessions into three equal parts:

One-third was offered directly to the Temple for the worship of God.

One-third was given away to the poor, widows, and needy.

One-third was kept for their own modest household needs.
Remarkably, the vision accounts record that no matter how much they gave away, their remaining portion always multiplied. God blessed their generous stewardship continuously, proving that a heart opened wide in charity is never left empty.
The Immaculate Conception in the Mystic Vision
The 17th-century Spanish mystic Venerable Mary of Agreda, author of The Mystical City of God, wrote extensively on the divine mysteries surrounding Anne and Joachim. She described how their long period of prayer and fasting culminated in a unique, holy union blessed by God.
Rather than a birth marked by ordinary spiritual stain, Mary was conceived without the spot of original sin; immaculate from the very first instant of her existence in St Anne’s womb.
Furthermore, St Bridget of Sweden (14th century) and St Elizabeth of Schönau (12th century) both recorded profound revelations regarding the spiritual graces flooding the world during those nine months. St Bridget wrote that angels kept constant watch over St Anne, guarding the living tabernacle that carried the future Mother of the Redeemer.

St Anne is a powerhouse of grace for everyday believers. As the mother of Our Lady and the grandmother of Jesus, her place in the heavenly court is uniquely intimate.
