Reflection for Pentecost Sunday, 2024 Year B

May 20, 2024 | Reflections

On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were gathered in the Cenacle with Our Lady. This was room of the Last Supper where Jesus instituted the Eucharist and the Ministerial Priesthood.

Our Lady, as Mother of the Church and Spouse of the Holy Spirit had been guiding and supporting the Apostles for nine days of intense prayer. Suddenly, there was the roar of a mighty wind which shook the building and drew many onlookers, and the Holy Spirit came down the Apostles in the forms of tongues of fire. The Apostles were interiorly transformed through an abundance of charisms. They were no longer timid and fearful, but courageous witnesses of Jesus and of his Gospel.  With the powerful force of his divine action, He brought them to the understanding of the whole and entire truth, and He made them into perfect witnesses of Jesus, even to the shedding of their blood. This was the beginning of the earthly journey of the Church in the history of humanity. St Peter would preach with courage and boldness to the crowd outside and that day around three thousand were Baptised. It was like a reverse of the Tower of Babel; all could understand the Gospel in their own native language. We all need the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The most important of these are the three theological and the four cardinal virtues: faith, hope, charity; prudence, fortitude, justice and temperance.  In the divine sun of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, these virtues germinate, grow, become more and more developed and thus lead the soul along the luminous way of love and of sanctity.

I was fortunate to study for the Priesthood in Rome, Italy. I remember the charm of all the fountains. Rome has  more fountains there than any other city in the world. There are fifty monumental fountains and nearly two thousand smaller fountains. It is good drinking water and I used to notice that many pilgrims fill up their drinking bottles from the fountains. The effect of the cascading water is delightful and adds greatly to the charm of the city.  But sometimes there is a problem. The companies that manage the water supply have occasionally gone on strike and then suddenly those magnificent fountains are dried up and lifeless. When the water supply comes back on, the difference is stunning and it is obvious to everyone, this is what a fountain is supposed to be! We are like a fountain and the Holy Spirit is like the water. Without the Holy Spirit, we are missing something vital. But with the Holy Spirit we are what we should be.

We are living in turbulent times with such much moral pollution and doctrinal confusion. At Fatima, Our Lady warned about these times when Marxist Atheism would spread everywhere unless Russia was converted. Marxist atheism may be compared to the ten horned dragon in the Book of the Apocalypse, which opposes the Ten Commandments of God. It has infiltrated into politics, universities,  families and every walk of life. Many now act without any reference to God’s Laws and this results in turning God’s Plan for creation upside down, through contraception, abortion, divorce, euthanasia and now LGBTQ ideology, where some people become convinced that they can actually change their God-given sex. God created only two genders: Male and Female. Young people today are often disorientated and very confused about what is right and what is wrong. Thus, there is a great need for clear teaching and shepherding. Fortunately, there are some good resources on the internet.

These are the time when we await a second Pentecost to convict the world of sin and renew the face of the earth.   Our Heavenly Mother has called us through the messages given to Servant of God: Fr Stefano Gobbi, to enter into the Cenacle of Her Immaculate Heart. She said: I ask that all the Church be gathered together in the spiritual cenacle of my Immaculate Heart.  Then the Holy Spirit will bring you to the understanding of the whole and entire truth. (Message 450 e). The Marian Movement Cenacle is offered daily at the Divine Mercy Shrine. Monday to Friday 6pm to 7pm, Tuesdays 8pm Men’s Group and Saturdays 9.30am to 10.15am. These messages of Our Lady through Fr Gobbi are simply an explanation of the Word of God.

These are times of more intense prayer. We should never neglect the Daily Rosary. Our Lady said:

Fight with the weapon of the holy rosary, and walk along the way of love for Jesus, of contempt for the world and for yourselves, of humility, of charity, of simplicity, of purity.(Message 314 i).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation. This, together with the Eucharist are essential sacraments provided by Jesus for our growth in holiness. When people sin, the water supply dwindles. The valve to turn the water supply on again is the Sacrament of Confession. The Holy Spirit breathes on us again and grace is restored. Let’s be continuous in prayer for the coming of the Second Pentecost, together with the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart, which will cause the renewal of the earth, where God will reign once again with His Will.

Come Holy Spirit, come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your well-beloved Spouse.
