OUR MISSION
Welcome
The inspiration behind building this Shrine in honour of Divine Mercy here in Western Australia was not only to cater for the needs of the parish, but to provide the numerous Divine Mercy prayer groups and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Perth with a beautiful and uplifting place of pilgrimage; a sanctuary of prayer and healing where all could come and be spiritually renewed at the foot of the Divine Mercy Image.
Welcome to the website of the
Divine Mercy Shrine
Due to the growing population in Lower Chittering, Fr Fox and a Planning Committee begin planning for a Mother Church and Shrine for the Parish. Mr Bernie Prindiville, a land develop, was approached and in 2007 he generously donated 4.2 hectares of land to the Archdiocese for the construction of a Shrine and School at Maryville Downs Estate.
Peter Anthes designed a magnificent domed Church, together with a Parish Hall, Parish Offices and Presbytery. The plans were approved by the Archdiocese of Perth and Archbishop Hickey agreed that the Shrine could be named in honour of Divine Mercy. Parishioners and other volunteers collected approximately 1500 tonnes of rock to clad the building. This was stored on site until construction started in late 2011.
After much fundraising and a generous bequest from the late Stipe Balenovic, the building was constructed in tilt-up concrete and then clad in local stone by Gingin stonemason John Glover. A magnificent copper dome was installed and a carillon of five large bronze bells made in Italy were installed in the two bell towers. The Church, which is now popularly seen as a Shrine was formally dedicated by Archbishop Costelloe SDB, Catholic Archbishop of Perth on 6 th June 2021, the Feast of Corpus Christi.
